NEC was showing its "first dual 2G, 3G cellphone" here in Cannes this week. The phone is hardly a surprise; what was a bit surprising was the promise that the handset will be on sale in the UK soon.

both GSM and 3G in one handset

Hutchison "3" will be launching the NEC e606 in March, staff on the 3GSM booth promised.

That means, almost certainly, a CeBIT launch, say observers here.

Nobody on the booth would comment on probable pricing, and no distributor is yet admitting to have secured stocks. But there was a working model of the phone - to be played with, not just admired - on the NEC booth, together with the absurd e808 PDA/phone which will also ship around the same time.
